There are just a few weeks left of the spring season, and if you’re like most people, you’re getting ready to start your summer fun in the sun activities.
Many people reserve things like barbecues with friends and family, camping, and relaxing in the hammock in the backyard for the summer months because the weather is so nice.
But, with the extra activity comes a lot of opportunity for water and electricity to mingle. This is the worst situation that can happen for homeowners, and will quickly put a damper on your summer fun.
To keep yourself and your family safe this summer, don’t just stop at sunscreen and flotation devices … make sure to follow these electrical safety tips as well:
- If you have a swimming pool, water feature, or any kind of water play in your backyard this summer – make sure to use outlet covers on all outdoor electrical outlets.
- Keep extension cords, cords for fans and radios, and any outdoor appliances far away from any water, and make sure everyone knows to dry their hands before handling any kind of electrical items.
- Never set electrical items on the edge or near the edge of the pool. It is too easy for these items to be accidentally knocked into the water and cause serious injury to those in the water.
- If an electrical item has gotten wet or accidentally sprayed with water, make sure to throw that item away and replace it. The power source inside of the item has also been damaged and could short circuit, even if the outside of the item appears dried off.
- Whenever possible, make sure to use battery-operated items outdoors. This way there is no chance of an electrical accident or injury.
- If you have a wet-bar outside, make sure to unplug any extension cords that you have during the time that you are outside. Items like radios or blenders may only be in use for the time of the outdoor event, and should be unplugged once you are done.
Keep your outdoor area reserved for fun, laughter, and time spent together with loved ones and family. Don’t let an electrical disaster or accident ruin the fun.
