During the fall season the weather can do a number of things. While the nights dip down into the 50s and even 40s, the days hold steady and warm. And, every now and then a thunder and lightning storm will roll through and wreak all kinds of havoc.
Power outages and downed power lines are not uncommon when a fall storm comes through. High winds and lightning strikes can cause trees to fall and transformers to blow. There are many electrical concerns to be thoughtful of during the fall.
Here are some electrical safety tips that you can follow this fall:
- The timing for mowing the lawn or edging with a trimmer is coming to an end. Make sure to safely store your warm weather tools away in the garage or in a shop. If you have tools like leaf blowers that haven’t been used since last season, make sure to check them for wear and tear, blockages, and damage. Also, check their power cords to make sure there isn’t any fraying or exposed wiring. If you do notice any damage to your cold weather tools, make sure to repair or replace them immediately.
- If you have any outdoor appliances that will not be used during the cold weather season, make sure to unplug them and store them away. Install outlet covers over your outdoor plugs to protect them from dirt and debris build-up. Plugging in an outdoor appliance come spring time can get dangerous if the plug is full of dirt.
- Outdoor lighting. Make sure to keep any outdoor lighting free from dry leaves, sticks, debris, and dirt. These areas can easily catch fire if a small spark is let loose. Dry leaves make a great kindling for a smolder fire.
- Electrical blankets. If you use electric blankets in your home, make sure that they are not tucked under mattresses and are not left plugged in all night. Do not cover an electric blanket with a bedspread. Make sure that everyone in your home knows the dangers of an electric blanket.
The cold weather can create a lot of extra work for families trying to get to and from work or school. Make sure that around your home extra work is not created by careless electrical safety. Follow these tips to keep you and your family protected.
