10419582_sWith the winter coming to a close and the promise of warmer weather just on the horizon, many people are starting to plan their spring season activities.

In the stores, you can find huge discounts on all things February and new items for getting your baskets and eggs ready for the big Easter holiday. These signs all point to spring and spending more time outdoors in the yard.

While it is still a little ways off before the weather will be consistently nice enough to eat outdoors or do any kind of yard play, this is a great time to be planning your outdoor lighting schematics. Having landscape lighting is a great way to add ambiance and safety to your yard for anyone who spends time in your yard.

Follow these tips for installing outdoor lighting at your home, the right way:

  • Make sure you are purchasing equipment that is designed for the elements it will face. For instance, don’t install a lighting fixture on the front of your garage that is not designed to get wet. If there is no eve or covering over the front of your garage, your new light will get wet and should be designed to withstand such elements.
  • Once you have your outdoor lighting installed, make sure that you are using outdoor-rated light bulbs. While you are installing your outdoor lighting because you are inspired by the warmer weather, that doesn’t mean that there will only be warm weather ahead. Make sure that the light bulb you are using is rated for all kinds of weather.
  • Just like your indoor fixtures, it is important to use the right sized light bulb in your outdoor fixtures. Using bulbs that have wattage that is too high, can cause fire risks and electrical problems. Only use the size of light bulb that the fixture is designed for.

As always, safety is a major concern for installing any kind of permanent lighting outside of your home. There is a right way and a wrong way to add lighting to the outside of your home, and the wrong way will get you injured.
