Electric Blanket Safety This Fall

37910646_sNow that fall is here to stay for the season, focus turns from fun in the sun to how to keep warm and cozy with the ever-dropping temperatures.

As with all electric items, there are some safety concerns when it comes to using electric blankets. Most of these concerns can be quashed simply by following some common sense safety tips:

  • If you are not using your electric blanket, make sure to unplug it. If you use the electric blanket as a bedspread, make sure to turn it off and unplug it when you are not in bed. Having any kind of electrical item plugged in when not in use is a dangerous practice. For instance, you wouldn’t keep the oven on all day while you were at work, right? Make sure that your electric blanket is only plugged in and warm, when you are using it.
  • If you have pets, make sure they do not lay on the electric blanket. Inside of the blanket is a configuration of heating coils. These coils heat up when the blanket is plugged in and turned on, and that is what keeps you warm. However, if you have pets, their claws can puncture and damage the heating coils. This damage could lead to an electrical short or surge.
  • A major concerns when using electric blankets is overheating. Always keep your electric blanket as the top layer of bedding on your bed, never underneath the sheets or comforter. Don’t stack a bunch of pillows, stuffed animals, or books on top of your electric blanket when it is turned on. If you have an electric blanket on your bed, and you need to use your bed to study or work on a project, remove the electric blanket and fold it up. Any damage to the coils can be dangerous.

Warm sweaters, socks, and slippers are all favorite items for keeping warm around the house. An inspection of your heating system is a good way to ensure that the nip in the air will be kept away. And, for some, an electric blanket is a great way to keep toasty warm through the night. Just make sure to follow these electrical safety tips when using your electric blanket.
