25007490_sA recent report published by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, stated that nearly 50 serious electrical shocks every year can be attributed to areas in and around swimming pools. Everyone knows that water and electricity do not mix, and can cause serious injury and even death if not treated properly. However, it is still common practice to have electrical items and appliances around and near swimming pools.

Here are some electrical safety tips to follow when you and your children are near a swimming pool:

  • It is important each year to have your swimming pool and hot tub inspected by a professional electrical to identify any causes for concern and have them repaired. All equipment should be compliant with local and National electrical codes. Make any necessary repairs and upgrades.
  • A good rule of thumb is to keep all electrical cords and junction boxes at least five feet away from swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs. Breakers and switches should be clear of obstructions and easy to get to in case of an emergency
  • Having any kind of electrical appliance or device around the pool creates a dangerous situation. As much as possible, use battery operated items in place of those that require electricity. If you must have electrical appliances outdoors, keep them a safe distance away from the swimming pool and keep them out of reach of pets and children.
  • Extension cords are very useful electrical tools for when you need a little more distance to an electrical outlet. However, they are not meant to be used as a permanent electrical source. Having extension cords laying around on the patio near a swimming pool can be dangerous. If you are using an extension cord to power an appliance or electrical item, keep the cord stowed away and out of reach of children and pets.
  • If there is a thunderstorm predicted, do not swim or spend time near the swimming pool or hot tub. The electricity from lightning is very real and can cause serious injury if you are in the water. This is a dangerous combination and nothing to mess with.

There are still several weeks left of summer weather. If you have a swimming pool or, will be spending time near one, make sure to follow these simple safety tips. It is always best to be extra prepared.
